“Armor Hunter Mellowlink” is a 1988 twelve-volume OVA prequel side story to “Armored Trooper VOTOMs”; directed by Takeyuki Kanda (“Blue Sonnet”, “Metal Armor Dragonar”, “M.S. Gundam: The 08th Team”), and with character designs by Moriyasu Taniguchi (“Blue Comet: S.P.T. Layzner”, “Garaga”, “Real Ghostbusters”).

In the midst of the 100-year war between Balarant and Gilgamesh, a cease fire is called. However, this suspension of hostilities is issued before Gilgamesh is able to secure a large quantity of Jijirium, the rare ore needed to power their fledgling Perfect Soldier project. As a result, a crack team of VOTOM pilots is sacrificed for the top brass’ greed and the project’s continuation. Striped of their backup, the protection of their military, and even their giant humanoid mecha, they are left for dead; ordered to hold back the advancing Balarant forces while the main army escapes with the stolen goods. Against all odds, one man survives, Private Arity Mellowlink. Imprisoned by his own side, he is put on trial, and watches disbelieving as he and his dead comrades are denounced on trumped-up false charges of insubordination, and blamed for what will be referred to as the Planbandoll Scandal, in order to protect their superior officers.

Revenge! Fleeing the military courtroom lynching with only his team members’ dog tags and his trusty outdated anti-AT rifle, Mellowlink seeks retribution for his fallen compatriots, and hunts down the foolish commanding officers and power seizing war merchants who were safe and protected, while they sent his friends to their deaths. On his quest for vengeance, Mellowlink is shadowed by the Gilgamesh Information Officer, Lieutenant Keik Carradine, and aided by runaway princess cum gambling cardshark, “Lulucy Ramon”.

Macho, manly, military mania, in the same vein as Anime like “MOSPEADA”, and “VOTOMs”. “Mellowlink” is the kind of action-packed entertainment where badass, honor bound guys and teasing, beautiful women fight against snide villains, and take on an entire evil political and military establishiment that uses and abuses its common soldiers as expendable pawns.
