Urban Square
Home/Change Series
“Urban Square: In Pursuit of Amber” is a 55 minute OVA from 1986. Character designs for the show were done by Akemi Takada, “Patlabor’s” Character Designer.
Down on his luck, stumblebum, screenplay writer Ryo Matsumoto has just had another of his manuscripts turned down. After hearing how he should write about his “own experiences”, he decides to ease the pain of another rejection with a drink at a local bar, a drink which, along with his burning cigarette, winds up on his lap--because he was too busy gawking at a beautiful girl. Heading home to his miniscule one room apartment, he and his script are knocked into the gutter by a running man. The stranger grabs the screenplay off the ground, slips a letter into it, hands it back to Ryo; and then hurries off down an alley. Ryo, feeling further dejected, walks off in the other direction. But when he hears the sound of a glass bottle breaking, he turns to see a man in black, holding a large silenced automatic rifle, standing over the dead body of the guy who hit into him.
After a furious, frantic, frenzied flight across rooftops, Matsumoto discovers his real life has become a B-grade crime drama, filled with contradictions, coincidences, and contrived catch phrases. Now paired with the gorgeous gal from the bar, college co-ed Yuki Tamura, Ryo must help Detective Mochizuki (a tough cop who would turn in his badge in protest if he needed to) take down the vile villain and slimy counterfeit art dealer, Gouda Geese. If Ryo fails, Gouda’s henchmen will have him and Yuki sleeping with da fishes!
Despite some plot problems that aren’t really explained away with just: it’s suppose to be like one of those movies, the Anime is a lighthearted, breezy romp with fun appealing characters. I wish it would’ve become a short series, where Matsumoto would continually be thrown into scenarios that he couldn’t write about, because they’re all way too cliché.
