Kamen no Ninja Akakage / Red Shadow, Masked Ninja
Home/Change Series
“Kamen no Ninja Akakage” (“Masked Ninja - Red Shadow”) is a 23-episode TV series from Toei Studios, shown in Japan from 1987 through ’88. It’s based on an earlier live-action hero show from the late 1960s made from a manga by Mitsuteru Yokoyama ("Tetsujin 28/Gigantor", "Giant Robo"). The character was later brought back again in 2001 for the movie “Red Shadow”, directed by Hiroyuki Nakano.
Set during the Warring States period of 16th century Japan, the story follows three ninja who fight for a unified nation where the common folk can live in peace. These ninja, Akakage, Aoikage, and Shirokage, are charged with the duty to protect Oda Nobunaga from the attacks of the Golden Eye sect led by Genyousai.
Sorry, I haven’t seen much of the TV show… so that’s all I know. In the live-action 2001 movie, Akakage becomes fed up with the Way of the Ninja after: his ninja love, Asuka, dies; his best friend, Aoikage, goes AWOL; and he’s ordered to kill a rival kingdom’s princess, Koto. He decides to leave the service of his lord, Togo, and fight to protect the life of Koto from her traitorous power-mad chamberlain.
