Devilman - 1987 & 1990
Home/Change Series
"Devilman" is a two shot OAV series based on a 1970’s Japanese cartoon series and the manga/comics of Go Nagai (see
here). The first OAV came out in 1987 the second one in 1990.
Guess what. On earth there are two worlds: the normal everyday one in which humans live, and the Demon World, where the monsters from our nightmares live. It wasn’t always this way. Long ago the whole planet was run by demons (basically your Golden Age of Demons) and they spent their time walking around naked, killing each other. Then came the Ice Age and they were turned into Demon Popsicles. Now, thanks to global warming, their ice prison is melting and very soon the world will be overrun with monsters. Who will stop them? Who will save mankind? DevilMan.
Even though most of the monsters are still imprisoned, their sprits are so powerful that they are able to run free. But fortunately for mankind, with no bodies the demons’ spirits can do nothing. There is one exception to this rule. If a man can get drunk or high enough, he can merge with a demon. In most cases the demon’s consciousness takes over, but if it’s “a man who’s pure of heart and says his prayers by night” his consciousness will remain in control and he’ll gain the use of the demon’s abilities. One such man is Akira Fudo, who merges with the demon Amon to become Devilman, in order to save mankind from the waking horde of demons.
This cartoon consists of swearing and violence. I recommend getting the English Dub because in the English Dub you hear the F word every other sentence and in this cartoon, that is it’s best feature. Yes, this cartoon is a potty mouthed, ultra violent Geek masterpiece.
